Weird English

Ok…no wonder why the English language is so hard to learn…I still have problems with it.

Writing my last post, I was writing fiery to describe our microwave.  Well, originally I spelled it firey…looks right, doesn’t it?  Fire + y = Firey.

Nope.  There were squiggly lines under it prompting me to right click & see that it should be fiery.  Why is it that the e was kicked to the left of the r?  It’s something I’ll probably ask my brother-in-law the teacher…he’ll know.

For now, I’m just going to blame this mispelling on it being too early :D

What do you think.  Click on the comment button below & to the left to leave me a comment…either supporting me or telling me that it’s 6th grade ELA & I should have known that :)

  • Popcorn Mathematics

Just a glimpse into the excitement my family & I have when snack time comes around.  After dinner & down time, and just before the bed time routines is our snack time.  At which point, the kids turn into vermicious knids, and Steph & I just go on this whirlwind merry-go-round trying to settle the kids down so that we can move on to the next routine.

During this snack time routine, we’ve had to deal with a bad case of burnt popcorn.  We weren’t sure if our aging microwave was suddenly telling us that it was time to go, or if it was simply that we purchased a bad batch of popcorn.  The popcorn in question was a store brand we’ve purchased from Wally World quite a few times.  So, we knew how it should pop up…or so we thought.

After burning 2 or 3 bags, and the girls noticeably not happy with their snacks, I decided it was time for some super sleuthing.  Thoughts of the microwave going down in a fiery explosion or even worse, throwing away all that un-popped popcorn, started running through my head.  I didn’t really like the idea of either outcome.  But then, I thought of something.

I looked on the box and started to question the mathematics of the bags of popcorn.  The entire box weighed a total of 62.62 oz’s.  Within the box, there were 24 bags of popcorn.  I grabbed some scrap paper & scratched my calculations down (sorry Mr. Stemples, I used a pen for it).  To break it down, the box weight (62.62 ounches) ÷ bags of popcorn within said box (24) = 3.03 ounces per bag.

Then, I had a flash back to the girls playing around with the microwave.  At that time, they were quite happy to tell me how the popcorn button showed all these numbers.  Of course, at the time, I told them to stop playing with the microwave before it blew up (yes, I know, it’s a white lie, but it got them to move pretty quickly :) ).  The numbers that they were quickly going through started to make sense.  The first number was 3.5, then the second was 3.0.  At this point, I’m really not sure what the third or following numbers were…but they didn’t matter.  I realized that before the bags of popcorn must have been 3.5 ounces each, and they are now 3.0 ounces.

    EUREKA!

So, now the girls & I are able to enjoy perfectly popped popcorn after pressing the popcorn button on the microwave twice.  Snacktime peace & happiness has now been restored.  :)

    Thanks for reading!

  • Every Thorn Has Its Rose.I thought for my first post, I would first explain what the meaning of “A Thorn Amongst The Roses” is.

You see, I am married to a wonderful wife with 3, soon to be 4, children.  All 4 of my kids are of the female persuasion.  I am the 1 male, surrounded by almost 5 females (and a neutered beagle).  As you may have guessed by now, I am the thorn and my kids & wife are the roses.

A Thorn Amongst The Roses also describes me & my interactions with my family.  Between Steph & I, I like to make things less simple & try to play devils advocate too much…thus, I’m a thorn in her side at times.  With the girls, when they want me to play Barbies, I have this odd habit of either trying to pop their heads off, bury them, or figure out how to melt them by using a magnifying glass on their foreheads.  Thus, I’m a thorn in their side as well.

So, the title has more meanings than one.  So, to really simplify it; I’m the odd man out :)

What do you think?  Feel free to let me know your thoughts & opinions on it.
